Orbitals in 3rd shell
WebAug 1, 2024 · The third shell has 3 subshells: the s subshell, which has 1 orbital with 2 electrons, the p subshell, which has 3 orbitals with 6 electrons, and the d subshell, which has 5 orbitals with 10 electrons, for a total of 9 orbitals and 18 electrons. WebCompared to the 3s and 3p orbitals, the 3d orbital is considerable higher than energy so it's energetically unfavorable for the argon to have to fill that 3d orbital as well. But yeah the ground state of argon is remarkable unreactive which means the partially filled 3rd shell is energetically stable. Hope that helps.

WebAug 13, 2024 · For l = 1, ml can be 0 or ±1; thus the l = 1 subshell has three orbitals. For l = 2, ml can be 0, ±1, or ±2, so there are five orbitals in the l = 2 subshell. The last allowed value of l is l = 3, for which ml can be 0, ±1, ±2, or ±3, resulting in seven orbitals in the l = 3 subshell. WebJan 30, 2024 · The 3d orbitals are quite compactly arranged around the nucleus. Introducing a second electron into a 3d orbital produces more repulsion than if the next electron went into the 4s orbital. There is not a very big gap between the energies of the 3d and 4s orbitals. The reduction in repulsion more than compensates for the energy needed to do this.

WebMay 12, 2016 · The p sub shell contain three orbitals (i.e., p could accommodate a maximum of 6 electrons) and are dumb-bell shaped. d shell contain five orbitals (implies d could accommodate a maximum of 10 electrons) and f shell contain seven orbitals (14 electrons maximum) (their shapes are a little bit complicated). Now, one more thing to note.
